Welcome to City Lights

City Lights is an outreach initiative that recruits volunteer and mission groups from around the country to serve in the Charleston area. We provide these teams with accommodations and connect them with volunteer opportunities with local organizations.

We are a ‘receiving’ ministry of Aldersgate Methodist Church. We host missions and service teams visiting the Charleston area and coordinate local service opportunities with our area partners. We believe the best way to serve a community is by connecting with local partners to foster ongoing, responsible, and values-driven ministry.

Anyone can be a part of the City Lights experience. We encourage adults, college students, and youth groups to come experience Charleston, SC. We ask that youth participants be limited to those 12 and older. Some of our partner organizations have age limits so please contact Stephanie Zartman at 843-606-6308 to coordinate younger volunteers.

We would love to work with your group! Dates are available throughout the year.

Established 2018

The Charleston area is diverse in many ways, with many organizations actively trying to help the community grow. So, in the spring of 2018, we started plans for best connecting mission groups with local work.

Our Goal

The goal of City Lights is to aid in the development of Charleston and surrounding communities by partnering in service with local organizations.

Typically, City Lights teams will be housed at Aldersgate Methodist Church. The church has a kitchen available to prepare meals and snacks. Mission teams are expected to provide their own meals. The church has an on-site shower facility with both a male and female sides. Aldersgate MC also has separate male and female bunkrooms. Guests should plan on providing their own sheets, blankets, pillows, towels and personal hygiene products.

It is City Lights Mission’s belief that the mission team’s experience will encompass more than just the time spent on the job site. The entire City Lights experience will include time spent at work sites and in various activities such as preparing meals, cleaning up afterwards, worship opportunities, and community interaction. These are all opportunities for personal and spiritual growth and community building. City Lights teams are encouraged to develop and nurture relationships with the community, the church staff members, and church members. An important way to develop Christian community with others is to worship together. Mission teams are invited to worship with Aldersgate MC. Do you have your own worked lined up? That is okay too. Have a place to stay but looking for volunteer opportunities? We would love to help you with that too!

At Aldersgate MC we are able to provide the following accommodations:

  • 2 bunk rooms with up to 30 beds with additional cots to accommodate larger groups
  • On-site showers and restrooms
  • Use of the kitchen for meal preparation
  • Use of classrooms, meeting spaces, and the social hall
  • Use of the sanctuary for evening worship and devotion

Volunteer teams are invited to have full use of our property and facilities while staying at Aldersgate. Many volunteer teams interact in the evenings with our Food Bank and Clothes Closet, Winter Warming Shelter for the homeless, or some of our other outreach events for the community.

City Lights could not exist if it were not for our partner organizations and our common goal of helping the Charleston community. There is a great need in the area and they are working hard in their unique ways to help meet those needs. It is our mission to aid them in the work that they do.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charleston opened its doors 35 years ago as a “Home-away-from-home” where families stay while their children undergo extensive medical treatment. Today, the House is able to serve 32 families every single night.

Here, parents and children lead a life as normal as possible during their traumatic times without the financial burden of costly hotel and travel expenses. Our home offers these families’ comfortable beds, hot meals, a caring staff, and a four-legged friend, Gardy, all just steps from the hospital.
The Ronald McDonald Family RoomThe Ronald McDonald Family Room at MUSC provides a sanctuary within the walls of the hospital where family members can rest, read, shower or have a cup of coffee while still being only minutes away from their seriously ill child.
